Stephen C. Dunn, MPT, COMT
Owner/ Physical Therapist

Pilates Certified

Stephen graduated with a Masters in Physical Therapy in 1998 from LSU. Immediately interested in hands on therapy, he began to study with known manual therapist Brian Mulligan and became certified in the Maitland Australian Approach in 2003. Stephen completed a comprehensive Pilates certification in Santa Monica, Ca at retroFit Pilates in 2002. The combined treatment of manual therapy with mind body awareness exercises using Pilates concepts was the start of his whole body treatment approach. Stephen then began to study the fascial system when he moved to Austin, Tx in 2004. This lead to training with Alan Weismantle and his Functional Manual Therapy Approach and most recently studying Myofascial Release with John Barnes. Stephen completed his level 1 GYROTONIC® pre-training and foundation training in the spring of 2007.

Now Stephen pulls from both a traditional and alternative mindset for an eclectic and innovative approach to physical therapy. Treatment consist of manual therapy (myofascial release, joint mobilization & manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, craniosacral therapy, traction, and neurodynamics) with mind body exercises utilizing Pilates and Gyrotonic equipment. Stephen and his wife, Cheryl, opened Core Therapy & Pilates in May, 2005. They have a young son and are members of Westlake United Methodist Church.

Cheryl graduated with a Marketing degree from Louisiana State University. She completed her Pilates training in July 2002 at Retrofit Pilates in Santa Monica, CA. with Barbara Wintroub. Since then, Cheryl has studied and worked with Madeline Black at Studio M in Sonoma, CA. She then completed her Intensive Level I Gyrotonic® training in the spring of 2004 with Kelli Fine and tested with Juliu Horvath in early 2005 to become Certified Level I Gyrotonic.
Cheryl has worked in numerous settings including:

- Rehab based Pilates with Physical Therapists and Chiropractors;
- Personal training for Pilates and Gyrotonic®;
- Group instruction for mat and equipment classes;
- Teaching Rehab Therapists in the safe use of Pilates for therapeutic exercise.

Her background as a gymnast and exercise enthusiast led her to an interest in Pilates and Gyrotonic. Cheryl and her husband, Stephen, opened Core Therapy & Pilates in May, 2005. They have a young son and are members of Westlake United Methodist Church. Cheryl is also a member of the Junior League of Austin.

Suzanne Fox Trotter, PT, FAAOMPT, RMT
Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist

Suzanne is a proud native of Atlanta, GA and graduated from Emory University in 1995 with a Master’s degree in physical therapy. Her undergraduate years were spent at Auburn University, where she received a B.A. in public relations. She moved to Austin in 1995, and focused her career on manual therapy, outpatient orthopedics, spine rehabilitation, sports related injuries, and chronic pain. In 2002 she completed a residency program with the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine (www.iaom-us.com) She was awarded fellowship status with the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in 2006 (www.aaompt.org). When she is not searching for restaurants that serve Sweet Tea, she is busy chasing after two small children or training for triathlons.

Arthur Hastings PT, MSPT, OCS
Physical Therapist

Arthur Hastings is a native Texan. His father was in the military so he was afforded the opportunity of growing up in Germany, Japan, and Korea. He went to Southwestern University for his undergraduate degree which was completed in 1998. He went to Southwest Texas State University for his graduate degree in Physical Therapy which was completed in 2002. He completed his residency training with the Manual Therapy Institute in 2006. He also received his Orthopedic Certified Specialist credentialing in 2006. He is currently in a Manual Therapy Fellowship program that he should be completing in the fall of 2007. He has been practicing for 5 years in the Orthopedic/Sports Medicine setting. In his spare time he enjoys running, cycling, traveling, and coffee shops.

Susan Clark
Certified Pilates Instructor

Susan began practicing Pilates almost nine years and has been a certified Pilates Instructor for four years. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from UT at Austin in 2002. Following graduation, Susan began her Pilates Teaching Certification at the Pilates Center of Austin. In the fall of 2003, Susan had the wonderful opportunity to teach in Paris, France. Currently, Susan is a student at ACC to become a Physical Therapist Assistant. She will graduate the summer of 2008. By combining the core principles of Pilates and the rehabilitation techniques of Physical Therapy, Susan wants to help people heal from injury and teach them how to prevent further problems.

Britt Causey
Certified Pilates Trainer
Gyrotonic® Instructor Apprentice

Britt, a nearly-native Austinite and outdoor enthusiast, received her full Pilates certification, with over 800 hours of training and apprenticeship, from The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado. She has further training in special applications of Pilates, including osteoporosis, hip replacement, pre-natal and postpartum clients. Britt began practicing Pilates in 2000, following a shoulder injury, and found in it a movement system ideal for transforming dysfunctional movement patterns, improving posture, and training the whole body to move intelligently in all activities. Britt is also currently an apprentice Gyrotonic® Instructor. Britt is passionate about teaching postural awareness and healthful movement utilizing Pilates-based exercise and Gyrotonic® movement to improve and maintain lifelong strength and functionality. She holds a B.A. in Zoology from U.T. Austin, and received a Master’s degree in Biology at Harvard University in 1991.

BENEFITS OF SPINAL SURGERY DISAPPEAR AFTER 6 MONTHS

Physical Therapy offers same outcomes for patients with sciatica 6 months after surgery.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal reports that spinal surgery for patients with sciatica offers a short term benefit, but by 6 months that benefit disappears and no difference is seen between patients who had surgery and those receiving physical therapy. 
 

American Heart Association Prescribes Physical Therapy First

The American Heart Association recommends doctors change their approach to prescribing pain relievers for patients with or at risk for heart disease. In a scientific statement published Feb. 27, 2007 in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, the heart specialists instead prescribe physical therapy first.
