What is Acupuncture?

Originating in China nearly five thousand years ago, acupuncture is part of a complete medical science known simply as Traditional Chinese Medicine, which involves the insertion of very thin, stainless steel needles into specific points on the body, essentially re-circuiting the body's natural ability to heal itself. These distinct points are arranged along the body's energy channels or “meridians.” The channels make up the body's communication network, connecting the exterior of the body to its internal functions.

Each acupuncture point has its own unique set of specific functions. When a point is activated by the insertion of a needle, circulation is encouraged, inflammation is reduced, and pain is diminished. The needles will often be positioned both locally to the problem area, as well as at distal points. For example, if a person is suffering from back pain, he or she may receive needle insertion on the hands or feet, in addition to points on the back.

Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body as a whole and emphasizes the delicate balance that leads to optimum health. Each acupuncture session is tailored specifically to your present condition and individual constitution.

Does it Hurt?

The truth is that acupuncture should be relatively painless. When the needle is inserted, sometimes people feel a slight pinch at the insertion site, but often this is not even felt. After the needle has been inserted, the most commonly reported sensations are warmth, pressure, heaviness, and tingling.
